List of Functions

Understanding functionality is essential to successful design. As a team, it is required that you establish all the functions that your design must perform. Functions are solution-neutral engineering actions that the product will perform and how it addresses the problem. Establishing functions requires an understanding of:

  1. The hand and wrist anatomy

  2. The underlying condition requiring treatment (i.e., carpal tunnel syndrome)

  3. Common treatment options to treat this condition

  4. Outcomes of these treatment options

Given that functions are the things that a designed device must do, it is required that each established function couple an action verb to a noun or object (e.g., lift a book). Below is a list of functions for my team's DP-0 project:

Design Sketches

Sketches are a critical tool for communication. They are used to convey concepts and they can be very general (quick idea generation) or provide details regarding the fit and function of a design. Sketches are a common tool in the initial stages of design and they serve as a means for critical thinking. When sketching, it is important to label all the materials involved in the sketch. Below is my sketch for the DP-0 Project:

Bill of Materials

A Bill of Materials is an extensive list of materials, components, and assemblies required to construct, manufacture or repair a product. Below is my team's bill of materials:
